The Carters

Miriam and Randy Carter, winter canoeing on the Hughes River in Virginia [p. 80].       Photographer unknown.

We have turned up a cache of Randy Carter’s famous book Canoeing White Water River Guide, eighth edition, 1974. This is a guide to running whitewater in an open canoe in Virginia, eastern West Virginia, and western North Carolina, and includes brief sections on canoe technique, safety, camping, fishing, Indian lore, and a very brief mention of kayaks. This is a classic of canoeing literature, which, despite being seriously dated, overstating river difficulty ratings by one or more classes, and misspelling whitewater throughout, should still be in every serious paddler’s library. We have found it offered by several book sellers on the internet for $10 to $20, paperback, used. Our books are brand new, in the original publisher’s packaging, and are available while supplies last for $6 for the paperback edition. It is 6" x 9", 267+viii pages, of which 229 are river descriptions and photos. The photos reveal typical safety precautions of the 1950s and early 60s — only two helmets are seen and lifejackets are nearly as rare. We are pleased to be able to offer this valuable resource and outstanding historical record to the canoeing public at a reasonable price. Shipping is $5 for the first book, $2 for each additional, via Priority Mail to any USA address. If shipped along with a materials order it will have minimal impact on the total charges if there is a package into which it will fit.
